Keeping Domestic Poultry & Waterfowl : the Domestic Situation
What are we breeding in 2010? ~ ~ Contact Us ~ ~ About Us

KEEPING BIRDS IN THE DOMESTIC SITUATION.

Keeping chickens and ducks in the garden is probably one of the fastest growing hobbies in the country. Its an incredibly satisfying pastime, but requires careful preparation and some daily duties.

We will explore some of the basic considerations needed to help you make the best decisions for you and your new birds.

Gardens can be wonderful places for birds, but can also be harsh environments. Being outside is entertaining and interesting but also has some significant hazards. Its up to us to try and give the birds the best environment we can and protect them where we can.

Shelter is a major consideration for birds outside in all parts of the country. For many of us the weather has become much more unpredictable, and that tends to mean wetter, or at least more showery. Chickens are not fond of the rain, ducks quite like it in moderation. For chickens its vital that they have plenty of places to get under cover, and all year around. Deciduous bushes are fine in the summer but scant shelter in the winter. Trees are a windbreak but most do not protect from getting wet.
